The extraordinary breadth of Bertolt Brecht’s talent reminds me of something John Kennedy once said to a gathering of artists and intellectuals who had come to the White House. He looked out at the audience and said that there had not been so many different talents, skills, and ideas inside the White House since the last night Thomas Jefferson slept there.
